Breast Lift Surgery

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is for a woman experiencing health problems and/or extreme self-consciousness associated with very large, heavy breasts. Medical problems associated with large breasts include back and neck pain caused by the excessive weight, skin irritation, bra strap indentations, poor posture, and interference with normal daily activities such as exercise. The surgery removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. This surgery can alleviate the health problems associated with large breasts and improve a woman’s confidence in her appearance. Reduction mammaplasty is often covered by insurance.

Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure. It is done under general anesthesia and typically takes 2-3 hours. Patients will need to limit strenuous upper body activity and wear a sports bra for several weeks after surgery. The scars go around the areola, straight down as a vertical line to the inframammary crease, and then horizontally in the crease under the breasts. Through these incisions, excess skin and tissue are removed and the nipple areolar complex is repositioned higher.

ABOUT PLASTIC SURGERY

Plastic surgery is a specialty that can be divided into two groups: cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal body structures and improve a person’s appearance. These procedures may not be considered medically necessary, but are performed, instead, to increase a person’s confidence and self-esteem. Liposuction, breast augmentation and tummy tucks are some of the most popular types of cosmetic surgery.

Reconstructive surgery involves those procedures performed to correct abnormal body structures caused by birth defects, trauma, burns, infection or disease. These types of reconstructive surgery include breast reduction, breast reconstruction and treatment of skin cancers. Reconstructive surgery is usually covered by health insurance.
